#motivation in this article i want to illustrate my vision of ‘how infotainment in cars will be in a few years’. infotainment in cars causes a problem right now, as [1] puts it:

“Dailytech recently published an article titled ‘Detroit Automakers Vie For App Devs Amid Infotainment Arms Race.’ Unfortunately for auto manufacturers, they are in a poor position to complete with companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc… and they should give up the arms race and take a different direction. Mobile operating systems and their associated hardware have a rapid release cycle that significantly outpaces vehicle infotainment systems. Additionally, mobile OSs are developed by specialized companies that can spend dump trucks filled with money on their platform. I’m sorry Dodge, Toyota, Honda and all your friends; you simply can’t compete.”

i totally subscribe to this view. this posting is about how to fix this issue by:


usability is the most thriving factor for innovation. i want to illustrate this by an example:

the desktop computer is currently in the process of being replaced by tablets (btw.: not by microsoft tablets - since selling old concepts to new markets just doesn’t work).

i expect that (on a worldwide view) the ‘desktop computer market’ (traditional PC standing under the desk) will completely vanish, replaced by a set of new devices:

the sudden advent of tablets

the primary reason is that android/iOS tablets totally fit the average users requirements:

usability is a thriving motor in innovation and this posting is about how to make computers in cars more appealing to users.

in regards to display integration this design is my favourite (found at [12]), why?

the concept i’m thinking of is this:

now the user can either use the tablet or a smartphone to query the stats of this car using the ‘data center’

the ‘data center’ would make access to the following data available:

replaceable hardware platform

ordinary consumer tablets probably won’t survive intense heat for long, which is mostly a screen and battery issue. still we could use industry grade tablets (which usually survive from -10 to 90 degrees celcius) in the car.

supporting consumer tablets might still be possible:

right now i see problems with supporting consumer tablets. using dedicated screens and forwarding sounds good at first but there are no open standards and the protocols which are deployed more often are proprietary and therefore no good target to be used. also it would require a device to stream to like a display. displays suffer the same problems as integrated computers do, they are outdated too soon.

so why not use industry grade tablets until consumer tablets get better?

here are three industry grade tablets which i find interesting:

being froced to use singletouch or multitouch is a real problem - especially when driving! that is because most tablets were designed to be hold in your hands while being operated. however, consider an external control, like the ‘bmw x5 idrive conroller’, is added to the tablet (via bluetooth BT) and the tablet is used in a ‘car mode’ (for instance by using the app ‘Car Home Ultra’). such an integration would seriously make a difference.

such dials could be modified to have a very sensitive surface which would allow to write letters, without having to glance at the screen, even while driving - probably everyone remembers when palm cam up with handwriting recognition. why not integrate that?

tablet audio output

audio output would be done using BT, like it is done with mobile phones in cars today. if the tablet is mountable via a tablet mount then audio would still work after being removed. for instance when entering/leaving the car. triggers to issue a modeswitch after mounting the device could be done using NFC.

open source software and the community

another major issues with OEMs, they ignore the community without realizing that the cummunity is the actual user. of course, most users having access to APIs and source code won’t be able to use it like a developer could. but maybe a little example helps to understand that it only takes few to make cool things available to a broad audience: the linux kernel is developed by a small group compared to the sheer ammount of users - often unknowingly - using it.

being open helps as you give others the possibility to contribute. see [16] and [17] how mighty this principle is. this graph illustrates the adaption rate to the linux kernel:

as it stands today one might ask what happens first: linux will also get a near 100% coverage of the desktop or the classical desktop will die out

as i already mentioned, taken the tablet market and the desktop market together, then linux is also about to take the desktop market.

anyway, when wanting to benefit of the community it is important to give them the tools they need to do cool things, and that is:

there is only one way to do proper tablet integration: you need a central computer in the car which is basically running each time you are going to make a request. this ‘headless’ computer interconnects all devices and sensors in the car. if wanted reports them even back into the data center for remote usage.

a powerful API helps community developers to make maximum use of it.

open street map

i always wondered why there is no adaption towards open street map [17] since the quality of the data is in many regards superios to other commercially available data sources.


osmand [13] is probably one of the best open streetmap related renderers. there are only two things i would like to have:
